About Me

I’m Joey Evans, a photographer based in Northampton, travelling across the UK to capture the enduring beauty of narrow gauge railways. I aim to preserve the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of lines where history still runs on steel rails.

Where It All Began

My passion for narrow gauge railways began at a young age in the top left-hand corner of Wales. Many of my earliest memories are of days spent with my grandparents, standing by the lineside and watching locomotives breathe life into the landscape. Their love of the railways — and the stories they shared about the past — sparked something lasting in me. Those moments of steam and scenery laid the foundations for what would become a lifelong fascination with capturing Britain’s narrow gauge railways through photography

Published Work

My photography has been featured in a range of railway publications, both in print and online, helping to share the charm and character of narrow gauge lines with a wider audience. Seeing my images in magazines, event programmes, and heritage railway media is both humbling and rewarding — a reminder that these living pieces of history continue to inspire others as much as they inspire me.

Calendars

Each year, I curate and produce a Narrow Gauge Railway Calendar, featuring some of my favourite images from across Britain’s preserved and working lines. The calendar is a celebration of steam, scenery, and the dedicated people who keep these railways alive. It’s available for purchase through my website, with proceeds helping to support ongoing photography projects and heritage preservation efforts.

Through the Lens

Whether it’s a quiet morning at a rural station or the bustle of a gala weekend, my goal is to share the unique spirit of Britain’s narrow gauge heritage through honest, detailed, and evocative imagery — keeping these small but mighty lines alive in both memory and art.
I’m always keen to collaborate with new heritage and narrow gauge railways across the UK — whether it’s to document restoration projects, create promotional imagery, or organise photo charters and special events. Every railway has a story worth telling, and through my lens, I aim to help share those stories with the care and authenticity they deserve.

Volunteering

Alongside my photography, I volunteer at the Statfold Barn Railway, where I contribute to the operation of one of the UK’s finest narrow gauge collections. Being involved hands-on gives me a deeper understanding of the dedication and passion that sustain these historic railways. This experience enriches my photography, allowing me to capture each scene with authenticity and respect for the heritage it represents.

Working on the Railway

By day, I work on the mainline railway, helping to keep Britain’s rail network moving safely and efficiently. Working in this environment has given me a strong appreciation for railway operations, discipline, and safety — values that I carry into my photography. I also hold a valid Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification, ensuring I’m trained and competent to work safely in operational railway environments. Whether I’m out on the mainline or photographing heritage lines, I always work with safety, respect, and professionalism at the forefront. My time on the “big railway” has deepened my understanding of how railways run — and why they mean so much to those who keep them alive.

The Journey Continues

As I continue to travel and document Britain’s narrow gauge railways, my aim remains the same — to capture moments that connect the past and present, and to share the stories of those who keep steam alive for future generations. Every photograph is part of a bigger picture: preserving the heritage, people, and passion that make these railways timeless. The journey is far from over, and I look forward to the lines — and the stories — still waiting to be discovered.
